Our Mission

"Sustainable nutrient circulation supports our lives"

We make Local Food Cycling (LFC) in your regions for sustainable society with safety and enjoyable.

Life with composting

A necessary thing for making compost is human wisdom and a little bit of time. If you give compost to the soil, it will enrich it and increase the things and plants living in the soil. Rich soil will grow good vegetables and flowers. What's returned to the soil will come back to us as good food or a beautiful landscape. The soil is a source of life. Human beings in the eco-system are also supported by the soil. It is wasteful to throw kitchen garbage away. MOTTAINAI.

Don't you think so indeed?

We are

We’re NGO Jun-namaken, Sustainable Lifestyle laboratory.
We are a civic group to promote the enjoyment of a lifestyle that aims to establish resource recycling in the local community.
Our activities include, among others teaching how to recycle our kitchen garbage and other waste generated from our yards that is, how to turn them into compost and communicating the joy of composting. Our know-how of composting is based activities and knowledge that have been cultivated over 50years by Miss Hatano. additionally, it has been improved again and again based on the cases of 200,000citizens from our lectures.

20 years ago-wa started post lectures for local citizens.
We think 5 issues for sustainable lifestyle in your region.

1.A system for circulation with in the community, Local Food Cycling.

2.Open class that can hands-on sustainable lifestyle skill.

3.Professional leader who have many experiences of technical and social skill. And community members who can give appropriate advices citizens for citizens.(LFC school)

4.Community organic garden.

5.Local food market.

In 2016,we started Local Food Cycling system.

Why "Local Food Cycling within radius 2km?"

hat is the area people consider as their living area; where they ride their bikes, see familiar faces, local products are purchased at small markets and stalls, and where children attend school.
We believe everything in this 2km-radius circle is related to yourself.

Organic garbage contains nutrition!

If we could recycle our waste 100%, our attitude would change to one of “appreciation”. Dirty garbage would become a treasure to communities. We wanted more people in Japan to have the opportunity to raise and consume delicious vegetables even in city centers.

This is the way we chose to create a nutrition cycle with garbage. It took us a long time to fully develop the idea of a food revolution, Local Food Cycling. To turn urban waste into delicious vegetables, we need a small and enjoyable cycling system.

Local Food Cycling is a food cycling system based on local house kitchens. There are 3 things we are aim for in this system.
First, to make a nutrition cycle originating with the compost.
Second, to build local communities every 2km-radius area where this activity is sustainable by the local people.
Third, to offer a cycling life that people enjoy and develop “power to live”.

We visualized the nutrition cycle and built an enjoyable and beneficial life cycle culminating in delicious vegetables and a circular economy employing young people.
It is a new solution scheme called “Community compost system”.

Our history

Why is it so hard to find safe vegetables?
23 years ago, this question led me to begin the work I am doing now.
When my father became ill, we decided to switch to an organic diet.
I discovered the soil was polluted. It is crucial for our lives.
How could I grow safe and delicious vegetables?

My first mission became to incorporate soil restoration into our daily lives to allow us to produce safe vegetables.
With a goal of developing a plan to share with the public, I began my research with my mother. She had fifty years experience with composting.Three years later, we launched workshops to familiarize people with our compost. The workshops became so popular that we hold 450 of them per year.

Whether old or young, when people first saw the compost, they became fascinated. They were excited to see unfamiliar things, like microbes.
I realized that good vegetables make people happy. The feeling of “fun” and the idea of ”delicious” can move people to action.
At the same time, there were problems. The idea of compost was spread by word of mouth and on the internet. However, sometimes it was communicated incorrectly leading some people to fail. We learned how difficult it is to spread the idea correctly to the public.

This is why we decided to educate people about composting. There are 2 important things to remember. One is that garbage should be recycled within the living area of 2km-radius. The other is that the person who instructs people on composting should be skilled and live within the community.

Today, there are 200 leaders in Japan and other Asian countries.
The compost is now well known to the public through our activities over 20 years. However, there are still many people throwing garbage away and burning it as waste. The house garbage thrown and burned a year in Japan is calculated to be about 20 million tons.

Why do they burn garbage containing 90% water?
Why do they waste it?

We need Local Food Cycling for our food system light now!
Teke action , come together.

What is compost ?

Compost means organic matter decomposed by microbes into a nutrition substance which plants can easily absorb. Organic matter is not completely but partially decomposed. As hard-to-decompose organic matter is steadily supplied, it will continue to give nutrition to plants at a slow pace. This is called "soil fertility".

Compost gradually improves soil fertility. It works somewhere between soil conditioners and fertilizers. When chemical fertilizers were not available in old times, compost was crucial to making a good soil. When soil is enriched with compost, it will easily gather and drain water, yet also retain the water better.
The idea we have in mind of good compost is a substance that has a soft touch like "walking in the forest".
It's a Waste to Throw Kitchen Garbage Away.
When you turn over fallen leaves, you will find many insects underneath. If you look at them through a magnifying glass, you will also find lots of microbes. Anyone of these living things is an important member of the natural living environment. You have learned at school that these living things are decomposers.

If you mix withered plants with kitchen garbage, you will be able to make compost. You may feel microbes "breathing" in this process. Moreover, when you touch the soil, you may become aware of the nature surrounding you.
